YAKIMA — With points at a premium and each defense being disruptive, one scoring run would likely be enough to decide Thursday’s Class 2A girls basketball quarterfinal between Hudson’s Bay and W.F. West.

W.F. West sprinted out of the blocks in the fourth quarter for that decisive run in a 48-41 win at the Yakima Valley SunDome.

The Bearcats scored seven straight points to open the fourth and take a 37-30 lead.

In a game where the biggest lead had been four points, that gave W.F. West enough cushion down the stretch.

No. 3 seeded Hudson’s Bay now hopes to stay alive for a trophy Friday against No. 9 West Valley-Spokane in the fourth-place semifinal.

The Eagles will hope offense comes easier than it did Thursday. Hudson’s Bay shot 14 for 62 from the field (22.6%).

“They’re very long, so it was difficult for us to get open shots,” Hudson’s Bay coach Michael Rainville said. “They were pushing us out with their zone. We couldn’t get the kind of shots that would be effective for us.”

Hudson’s Bay had beaten W.F. West in another low-scoring game (33-30) in the district semifinals on Feb. 14. But Thursday, the No. 4 seed Bearcats turned to their star when they needed a big shot.

Drea Brumfield is a 6-foot-3 Pepperdine-bound forward and the program’s all-time leading scorer with more than 1,100 points. She had 18 points along with 10 rebounds as the Bearcats outrebounded the Eagles 42-32.

Mahaila Harrison scored 15 points to lead Hudson’s Bay. Aniyah Hampton and Zoriah Jones each added nine points, with Jones hitting three 3-pointers.

Jones’ final 3-pointer pulled the Eagles within 45-40 with 1:02 to play. But that would be the last in a game where Hudson’s Bay struggled from outside, shooting 6 for 22 from 3-point range.

“We have to keep our confidence up,” Rainville said. “We are a good team. We belong here, certainly.”
