Gee Creek rest areas to close for maintenance

RIDGEFIELD — Those who travel along Interstate 5 won’t be able to count on stopping at Ridgefield’s Gee Creek rest areas starting next week.

The rest areas will be closed in both directions as of 6 a.m. March 14 until 5 p.m. March 21.

During the closure, Washington State Department of Transportation maintenance crews will perform annual maintenance and repair work. They’ll be doing deep cleaning, repaving portions of broken pavement, fixing damaged picnic areas, updating landscaping and doing routine inspections of the sites’ electrical and plumbing systems.

The two rest areas are some of the state’s busiest; more than 1 million annual visitors stop to use them. That figure, according to WSDOT, is calculated by the number of toilet flushes.
