Letter: Who supports self-sufficiency?

By Tom Carney, Vancouver

It has been almost 50 years since the first oil embargo. In that time, state and the federal governments have set new mileage standards for motorized vehicles. This was accomplished in spite of great pushback from the oil companies and auto companies. Now the auto companies are getting on board by either increasing mileage per gallon or going electric. The oil companies are still pushing back.

My questions are: 1) Name a Republican who is for new mileage standards, and 2) Name a Republican who has stood up to big oil. Remember this when you put gas in your car to go to work and when you vote. We have been listening to the phrase “energy self-sufficiency” for 50 years. Only the Democrats are listening.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
