Five new firefighters and paramedics are in training at Clark County Fire District 3, thanks to voter approval of a recent levy. Three are new positions, and two will replace retiring employees.

Call volumes increased 12.6 percent last year in the district, which serves Hockinson, Brush Prairie, Heisson, Venersborg and Battle Ground. Emergency medical service calls accounted for 77.2 percent of all calls received.

Dr. Jillian Stansbury, a Battle Ground physician, has received a James A. Duke Excellence in Botanical Literature Award for her recently published textbook series, “Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals.” The award is bestowed by the American Botanical Council and was announced March 9 at an awards ceremony held in Anaheim, Calif. Founded in 1988, the American Botanical Council is a leading international nonprofit organization that addresses research and educational issues regarding botanicals, teas, medicinal plants, essential oils, other therapeutic plant-derived materials, and beneficial fungi. The books also showcase Stansbury’s decades of clinical experience using natural products as a primary therapy in her medical practice at Battle Ground Healing Arts.
