As Lieser School’s fate was sealed, items within it were spared for a community “garage sale.”

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 14, the Vancouver Housing Authority will give away tables, desks, shelves and chairs that were left inside the building at the Lieser School, 301 S. Lieser Road. The elementary school ended its operations in 1992 before becoming a hub for early childhood programs, according to previous reporting. When its age began to show in its damaged walls, leaky pipes and heating and ventilation systems, it was deemed obsolete.

The event also serves as an open house where community members can provide their insight on the potential redevelopment of the location. The site has been slated to be subdivided to become a fire station and host multifamily affordable housing units, which will be operated by the Vancouver Housing Authority.

After conducting public outreach, designers will use community feedback to create a preliminary site layout. The zone change application must be submitted in June, which will be followed by a planning commission review process. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2024 or 2025, depending on how the plan unfolds.
