Letter: Welcome, support immigrants

Once again, I received in the mail a message from one of our local elected officials that focused on controlling immigration by building more walls and fences at the border.

I find it almost impossible to believe that the focus is not to help those poor, desperate people. After all, if one is not related to Native Americans, then like me, you are a descendant of immigrants. Even our Founding Fathers were immigrants.

So why are we not welcoming and trying to help these people? We might actually learn something from them about their culture and the reasons they felt they had to leave their homelands to start another kind of life.

Kindness and understanding would certainly be more humane than building walls and fences to keep them out. Better to have some compassion for those in need, and this also includes the needy that are already here, and to be thankful that you are not one of them.

Just think about it.
