Letter: Desperate people, bad choices

In the article entitled “Conservatives push to end all abortion exceptions” (Associated Press, May 7), Troy Newman (president of the national anti-abortion group Operation Rescue) states that his group opposes rape and incest exceptions. He says their rationale is: “Don’t punish the baby for the crime of the father.” But by all means punish the mother? Newman doesn’t even mention the mother.

If we do away with safe and legal abortion, desperate women will search out unsafe and illegal procedures. Many will die. Anti-abortion legislation will not save lives. It will only trade the lives of the unborn for the desperate.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
