Letter: City staff gets the job done

Golly — Cathy Farian’s letter on May 18 (“Pride in city is gone,” Our Readers’ Views) struck me as sad and very different from my experience of living in Vancouver. The downtown area has improved over the years, we have good libraries and parks, lots of trees, fine schools, pleasant trails along the Columbia River, volunteer opportunities, and community college and university resources.

I’m grateful to be in Vancouver, and even though I’ve enjoyed community fireworks displays in the past, losing one evening’s entertainment doesn’t take away from all that we do have here in Vancouver. I recognize that there are problems that need solutions, and I appreciate the work of our elected officials and local agencies to find solutions.

Recently, I contacted Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle about a concern, and she replied within a day that she would look into it. Within another business day a city manager replied with information that was useful. It’s impressive to get such quick results, and I appreciate their responsiveness. Having lived in several other cities, I’m happy to be living in Vancouver now.
