I am beside myself. Marc Chamberlin’s letter stating that a baby growing inside a mother is “enslaving” the mother is the most outlandish babble I have ever heard (“Abortion involves conflicting rights,” Our Readers’ Views, May 17). The mother had a choice when she decided to engage in sexual intercourse with a man. If the outcome is a pregnancy, her rights end there and the baby’s take over.
I speak from experience because 50 years ago I found myself pregnant and single after my first encounter. At the time DNA testing was not available, so I raised her on my own when the father did not believe the child was his. At the time, an abortion was offered. I immediately turned it down as I felt God had given me this baby for a reason and it was my responsibility to raise it. Today I have a beautiful 49-year-old daughter with a master’s degree, a great son-in-law and two fabulous grandsons.
Yes, my life changed drastically but never once did I feel “enslaved.”
