Hawthorne Gardening Co. announced a 42-person layoff at its Vancouver facility to outsource its carbon filter manufacturing.

Owned by ScottsMiracle-Gro, Hawthorne Gardening, at 3204 N.W. 38th Circle, is paying the employees until Aug. 1, according to Tom Matthews, chief communications officer.

“The main reason is it gives us more flexibility in the hydro market,” Matthews said.

“We’re susceptible to highs and lows and demand changes. We’ll better manage inventory and manufacturing to go with market forces. But we’re continuing to make a presence in that facility for warehousing space.”

After this 42-staff reduction, Hawthorne Gardening will have about 150 employees in greater Vancouver and Washington. They include workers in warehousing, sales, marketing and other functions, Matthews said.

In February, the company also outsourced 150 employees as part of a restructuring.
