Letter: Climate impact adds up

By David Newcomb, Vancouver

Climate goals, those in leadership positions exclaim that some meaningful progress has been made, but goals with no actions are meaningless, and action is the sticking point; it incurs costs and inconveniences, often a lot of both, and pushback is generated. I admit my contributions to climate change. I bought nice stuff, took great vacations, bought cool cars, and lived beyond my needs. The greenhouse gas contributions of all that was insignificant, except that there were millions, if not billions of us doing the same thing. The sum was not so insignificant.

So in my remaining years I am attempting to tread gently, to not leave a bigger problem for following generations, and to lessen the likelihood that, years from now, they curse my name for the dismal life they may have been handed. I try to do with less. I don’t drive what I’d like to drive. I change my pleasures to more local things. All this will have no measurable effect on global warming; I will not live to see the any effects. Obviously we need millions if not billions of people doing the same.
