Letter: Good Americans protect democracy

Previous letters authored by Mr. Schimelpfenig have left me in a state of incredulity. His recent letter accusing Democrats of destroying America just made feel very sad for him (Our Readers’ Views, Nov. 11).

As I have read our history, there have been numerous examples of various and nefarious attempts to destroy our democracy. A few examples include the Jan. 6 insurrection; the occupation of Malheur Wildlife Refuge; any number of riots in the ’60s and ’70s; the American Civil War; a former president who was a misogynist, racist, and author of over 25,000 lies; Joseph McCarthy and his communist menace; QAnon conspiracies, Gen. Mike Flynn and Christian nationalism; and the list of threats goes on.

What has prevented America from toppling into the dark hole of neo-fascism, Christian nationalism, white supremacy and communism is the fact that a majority of Americans are good people who are intelligent, respectful of our laws and in possession of fully functioning crap detectors. Mr. Schimelpfenig might benefit from reading more about our history, especially how we avoided the numerous attacks on our democracy.

Also, it appears that “Make America Great Again” is a flop. How about this concept? “Make America Nice Again.”

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
