Letter: Protect rights for women

Don Hartley’s letter (and Beverly Kelvie’s endorsement of his letter) regarding women’s sole responsibility for pregnancy can only be defined by one word: stupidity.

I urge both to watch Smithsonian’s one-hour documentary, “She The People: Votes For Women.” Do Don and Beverly realize that women were treated as secondary citizens and did not win the right to vote until 1920 — nearly 150 years after the Declaration of Independence? When women protested and marched for the right to vote, they were assaulted and some were tortured by mostly white males (of which I am one). Men regarded women as baby factories and believed that they should be put in their place — I guess some men (and women) still believe women should be subservient.

I can only wish Mr. Hartley and Ms. Kelvie could return to that era and live their happy lives together with no birth control, no voting for women, and just producing babies without consequence. They are behind the times and living in an age that I would hope has grown up to the fact that “We The People” means all people including “She The People.” She The People should be equal to He The People — and she should have control over their bodies without the help of the male species, which has no idea about a woman’s body.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
