MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon police and fire departments were dispatched to a swatting incident Tuesday at Mount Vernon High School.

Swatting refers to the act of making a false police report with the intent of getting armed law enforcement sent to a particular location.

The Mount Vernon police and fire departments were sent to the high school about 9:44 a.m. after a reporting party advised that multiple students had been shot in a classroom, according to a news release from the Mount Vernon Police Department.

The Mount Vernon Police Department’s school resource officer coordinated with responding officers to assess the situation and minimized disruption to students and the community, according to the release.

According to the release, similar events were reported throughout the region within the same time period.
