Letter: Watch your pets’ diet

Pet food companies post on their products potatoes, rice, oatmeal or quinoa as carbohydrates that produce energy. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Lean healthy protein and high-quality fats should comprise a dog’s diet. Grain-free foods often contain legumes that have anti-nutrients such as lectins and phytates. Anti-nutrients are chemicals found in plants that prevent your body from absorbing essential nutrients from food. Grain-free foods potentially contain contaminant residues.

Highly processed food, foods that have been mechanically, chemically, and heat-processed (which is what is sold in most pet stores) cause inflammation, which then translates to many diseases.
