Mark Morris’ defense kept Ridgefield off the scoreboard until the fourth quarter, posting a key 20-7 win over the Spudders in a 2A Greater St. Helens League game in Longview.

Ridgefield outgained the Monarch 301-223, but the Monarchs got two key interceptions to spark their victory.

Kellen Desbiens only completed five passes for 45 yards, but two of them went for touchdowns.

The Monarchs also scored on a 41-yard halfback pass on fourth down from Kobe Parlin to Langston Bartell to go up 14-0 in the third quarter.

“That’s just a blown coverage, guys trying to do too much,” Ridgefield coach Scott Rice said. “Good call by Mark Morris at that point, but we’ve just to put ourselves in a position of, you know we preach, ‘Do your job,’ you know sometimes when we try to do too much, that’s the result of it.”

The result of this game is that Mark Morris takes control of second place in the 2A GSHL and keeps heat on first-place Washougal.

Ridgefield drops to 2-2 in league, battling for a playoff spot.

“It’s going to be tough.” Rice said. “We’re sitting at 2-2 now. We’re sitting in a tough spot of now. We’re in the middle of the pack to get into playoff contention. To be in a chance to go make some plays in the 10th and 11th week, we’ve got to be better. We just have to execute.”
