Stanwood offense too much for Union in 69-47 loss

The good news for Union is the Titans kickoff return team had a great game.

The bad news is that kickoff return team got a lot of practice.

Apart from taking a knee to end the first half, Stanwood scored on its first nine possessions Friday to beat Union in a wild game at McKenzie Stadium 69-47.

Stanwood’s wing-T offense gave Union fits as the Spartans rushed for 484 yards and eight touchdowns.

Ryder Baumgarner led the way with 264 yards on 21 carries and four touchdowns. Carson Beckt rushed for 178 yards on seven carries with three touchdowns, plus he had a touchdown reception and an 80-yard interception return for a score.

But Union’s offense also put up some impressive numbers.

AJ Attaran, getting the start at quarterback in place of Tyson Fuehrer, passed for 396 yards and two touchdowns. Cody Zehner rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

After both teams exchanged early scores, an interception at the start of the second quarter allowed Stanwood to open a 28-7 lead.

Union rallied to cut the margin to 42-27 by halftime. The Titans opened the second half by recovering an onside kick, then driving down for a touchdown. However, their two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving them in a 42-33 deficit.

Unable to stop the Spartans, the Titans would get no closer the rest of the way.
