100 Years Ago

It was announced on Oct. 20, 1922, that the Bowne Trio from the Portland-based Ellison-White Conservatory of Music would perform at the La Center High School auditorium later in the month. Admission to the event ranged from 25 to 50 cents, with all proceeds going toward buying library books.

75 Years Ago

The Camas Community Chest drive ran from Oct. 21-25, 1947. The charity organization declared its yearly goal was $3,920, with much of the budget going toward groups supporting youth activities in the Camas community.

50 Years Ago

Columbia River High School’s band director, Adair Hilligoss, received a $400 donation from the Hazel Dell McDonald’s in October 1972. Oliver Lund presented the check after the high school band performed during the fast-food chain’s opening day celebrations. The money was used to purchase band uniforms.

25 Years Ago

On Oct. 16, 1997, The Columbian ran its sixth volunteer call for Make a Difference Day, a nationwide event centered on doing good throughout the community. More than just yard work, the projects included helping elderly residents with Halloween decorations, assembling and painting furniture for a nonprofit, and picking up and delivering food donations.
