Letter: Arsonist insults democracy

By Randolph A. Cate, Vancouver

How dangerously empty the life of an individual must be to commit arson against an elected official (“Arsonist strikes Vancouver mayor’s home,” The Columbian, Sept. 12). That this person would choose destruction over dialogue says a great deal about the extreme nature of politics in our community.

This endeavor was meant to intimidate the mayor. That the attempted arson was thwarted was a blessing.

Through the years, we have seen various degrees of intimidation, from weapons at town hall meetings to laws limiting voting rights.

Sadly, that kind of hateful vitriol has arrived in Clark County and is an insult to democracy.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
