Letter: Trump can’t be believed

Former Attorney General Bill Barr recently said that while he is sure it was illegal for Donald Trump to take top secret documents home, he believes Trump should not be indicted for it. He asked, “What kind of precedent would that set?” It might set the precedent that when we say no one is above the law, we actually mean it.

When someone takes something that is not theirs to take, it is called stealing. Regarding Donald Trump’s theft of sensitive documents from the White House, let us review his list of excuses. Trump has said:

  • The documents were his, not the government’s (not true);
  • He gave back all the documents he had taken (until the FBI found a whole bunch more);
  • He (who reportedly shredded some documents then flushed the pieces down the toilet) was concerned that the National Archives would not properly protect them;
  • He was afraid President Joe Biden would destroy them.

So there you have it, Trump is just a concerned citizen who cares so much for our country that he will take top secret documents just to protect them. And if you believe that, I have an interstate bridge to sell you.

Interested in buying a bridge, Mr. Barr?
