Weather Eye: First fall-like weather system rolls through tonight

As the seasons change it is often that the previous season enjoys lingering and tickles our fancy or perhaps gives us something to talk about. We almost reached 90 degrees Monday, with a high of 89 degrees. Portland did manage 90 degrees. Neither were record highs for the date. Vancouver’s record high for Monday was 92 degrees in 1991 and Portland, 92 degrees in 1967.

We are still running about 4 degrees above average with the temperatures and rainfall remains at a paltry 0.07 of an inch. How would you like to see another quarter-inch or so of rain in that tally? Our first fall-like weather system rolls through later tonight with rain and then showers lingering into early Thursday perhaps. The heaviest rain will be to our north but looking at weather charts Monday afternoon, I’d say upward of a quarter-inch with heavier amounts in the mountains sounds good. Maybe less or maybe a little more.

We will see how our first encounter with an autumn storm comes about. We could see some fresh snow on the tops of the Cascade mountains. We wait until Friday with clear skies for a good look.

High pressure builds in, and we enjoy Friday through Sunday with highs near 80 degrees. Not knowing for sure how October is shaping up rain-wise, this weekend would be an excellent weather weekend to gather the family and head to the pumpkin patch. Sunny skies and first pick of the spooky orange giants.

We have had two days with highs of 90 degrees this month and that will be the final statistic for the month with clouds and cooler temperatures arriving. Last year in September we didn’t even manage a 90-degree high temperature. Of course, we had nearly 4 inches of rain that kept the sunshine at bay.

Spiders are growing larger day by day and early morning dew reveals their tangled webs. Crickets are bellowing out their last rounds of the chorus, perhaps giving the stage to thirsty frogs that may yet give us another round of chatter as the rain falls.

Be safe, pavement will be slick with any rain. See you on Thursday.
