Letter: Support ranked-choice voting

We shouldn’t have to plug our noses when we vote.

Angelo Branch (“New candidates are needed,” Our Readers’ Views, April 16) lamented that “if we are forced once again to vote for the ‘lesser of two evils,’ we will lose another precious four years.” That is correct.

We need better candidates with broader appeal, but to get there, we need a better election system so we don’t get stuck wasting our votes on unelectable or distasteful candidates.

Ranked choice voting is a simple improvement to the way we vote. Vote for candidates in the order you prefer: first choice, second choice, third choice, and so on. If your favorite can’t win, your vote counts for your next choice.

Ranked choice voting is a nonpartisan reform with support from across the political spectrum. Vote for who you really want, then rank your backup choices. No more voting for the lesser of two evils.
