Clark County Fire District 3 to seek levy lid lift in August

Clark County Fire District 3 will ask voters to approve a levy lid lift in the Aug. 1 primary election.

The Board of Fire Commissioners passed a resolution to place the lid lift on the ballot. The department said the extra funds would go toward additional staff, training and equipment, along with renovations to Station 34 in the Elkhorn area.

The proposed levy lid lift is 29 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value. That would cost the owner of a $500,000 home an additional $12.08 per month or $145 per year.

The levy lid lift would ensure the agency can have three-person engine crews, which it said is the industry best practice for agencies of Fire District 3’s size.

“Our current staffing model prevents us from entering buildings unless another engine company is on scene,” Fire Chief Scott Sorenson said in a news release. “This is not in line with industry best practices and can delay our response. The additional staffing will allow us to meet the emergency service level needs of our growing community.”
