Girls basketball playoffs: Late 3-pointers help Union fend off Rogers comeback

Hanna Summers and Ava Smith hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the final minute to help the Union girls basketball team beat Rogers-Puyallup 72-66 on Friday and advance in the 4A bi-district tournament.

Union (16-6) will play at Decatur of Federal Way in another loser-out game on Tuesday.

Union led 41-25 at halftime and appeared to be one its way to an easy week after stretching its lead to 19 in the third quarter.

But Rogers mounted a huge comeback, taking a 61-60 with two minutes to play.

Summers’ 3-pointer put Union back up 63-61. It was her only three points of the game. Smith’s triple on the next possession made it 66-61.

Brooklynn Haywood hits six free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

Haywood hits six 3-pointers and finished with 34 points. Smith added five 3s and scored 17 for the Titans.

SKYVIEW 66, SOUTH KITSAP 53 — The Storm recovered from a 32-23 halftime deficit to win going away at South Kitsap and keep their season alive in the 4A bi-district tournament.

Jordan Labrador-Hallett led Skyview (14-7) with 27 points, KiKi Parks had 15 points, Chanelle Paschal 10 points and TaRyah Hamstreet pulled down 10 rebounds.

Skyview faces another loser-out game on the road Tuesday when it plays at No. 7 seed Olympia.

COLUMBIA RIVER 53, WASHOUGAL 44 — Peyton Dukes scored 13 points and Taegan Benke added 10 as  Rapids won their eighth straight game to advance to the 2A district semifinals.

River will face W.F. West at 7:45 p.m. Monday at Black Hills High School in Tumwater

Chloe Johnson had 19 points, five rebounds, six assists and five steals to lead Washougal.

TUMWATER 51, WOODLAND 26 — The Beavers kept it close in the first half, trailing only 15-13, but Tumwater surged in the second half to win the 2A district tournament first-round game on its home floor.

Emily Hughes scored 10 points for Woodland (16-6), which now play a loser-out game against Washougal on Monday at Fort Vancouver High School.

WF WEST 62, RIDGEFIELD 43 — The Spudders fell on the road and will face Aberdeen in a loser-out game Monday at 6 p.m. at Tumwater High School.

MARK MORRIS 42, ABERDEEN 23 — The Monarchs advanced to the 2A district semifinal with a home win on Friday.

Mark Morris will face Tumwater at 6 p.m. Monday at Black Hills High School in Tumwater.
