Letter: Democracy has been lost

By Neil Rylander, VANCOUVER

A reminder that on Jan. 21, 2010, the Supreme Court, by a 5-4 vote, declared that the First Amendment prohibits the government from restricting independent expenditures for political campaigns by corporations (Citizens United v. FEC).

This decision has led us into becoming an oligarchy where the rich have the voice and we citizens have little, if any. The decision by the Supreme Court, in my view, should have folks from both political parties very upset. Question, is it too late to reverse this issue and become a democracy again? Unfortunately, and again in my view, it’s too late.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
