Once again, we read about how terrible the turnout was for the election this month. If there is real concern about solutions, I offer two ideas.
No more February elections. We save money and ensure higher turn-out by adding these few issues to the November ballot. February elections were created in order to have low turnout, so why complain when it succeeds in its mission?
Second, less than 10 years ago, each county in Washington was allowed to decide whether to forward its ballots to all voters. Thanks to the wisdom of our auditor’s office, Clark County only forwarded ballots to voters with legitimate reasons, i.e., soldiers, students, snowbirds, etc.
Now it is mandatory for all counties to send a ballot to any voter, regardless of if they have moved from their registered address. When a person moves, their mail is forwarded for one year.
