Letter: Build other bridges first

People keep complaining about the spending for research on building a new bridge. Let’s think a little bit about why. We are trying to replace an early 1900s bridge that was built before an international airport and a lot of barge traffic (or traffic of any kind). Let’s get smart. We need two bridges for local traffic and a bridge for interstate traffic. The Republicans came up with a cheap bridge that would land in Oregon where Airport-Way turns south. I am a progressive but when a Republican has a good idea I know he or she is looking out for us.

I am not sure where they decided a west bridge should be built, but we should be able to figure that out.

After they are built, we will have time to replace our interstate bridge with less pressure to get it done. Maybe we will even consider a tunnel like Canada did for Interstate 5 going into Canada.

I don’t know how many people are aware of it, but what I am proposing is what traffic studies showed several years ago and no one I have heard has come up with a better plan.
