Letter: Observations of America

By Jim Sevall, Vancouver

After recently returning from a 23-day road trip to 27 states, I would like to share several observations.

First, gas prices are nowhere near as high as they are here in the West. In fact, I purchased gas in 14 states from Colorado to North Carolina to Connecticut to Montana, and the average price was $3.57 per gallon. In Vancouver it was $4.89.

I realize we have higher gas taxes here, but they shouldn’t make a difference of more than $1.30 per gallon.

Secondly, while there were homeless individuals in every relatively large city, I did not see a single tent. The politicians in the Northwest need to reassess their homeless policies to make it less inviting for tents to go up on city streets, in public parks, and on private property.

Lastly, the infrastructure bill passed by Congress is working. In every state there were numerous road repair projects underway.

After experiencing the deteriorating condition of many of our nation’s major highways and freeways, this work is much needed. Thanks to Congress for allocating the funds for these improvements.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
