Letter: Do something about inequities

By Bill Kelley, Yacolt
Published: July 21, 2023, 6:00am

I question what columnist John Crisp’s use of the word “our” means (“Acknowledge our racist past,” The Columbian, July 18). Racism exists in humans, all humans. It is about security, protection from those we do not know going back to the beginning of human existence. Those with the power used it for their ends. That is in “our” Constitution. Slavery is and was practiced by all races. It was not about racism, it was about profit and power.

Acknowledging racism is to say we are human. What is more important is to acknowledge the inequities in our society and do something about it. Unfortunately some do not care.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
