Local View: Mullet is committed to reproductive freedom

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson ruling — the Supreme Court decision that erased the constitutional protection for a woman’s right to make her own reproductive health decisions. In one fell swoop, the court made it possible for states to outlaw abortion and return to a time when women were forced to bring pregnancies to term and risked their lives seeking illegal abortions.

For the upcoming Washington gubernatorial election, we cannot rest until we elect someone who has demonstrated their unwavering commitment to protecting women’s rights. State Sen. Mark Mullet has pledged to codify the right to abortion in our state’s Constitution as one of his first acts as governor. This type of leadership is essential to protect all Washingtonians amid a nationwide assault on reproductive freedom.

As women legislators deeply invested in the well-being of our constituents, we know we must elect a candidate for governor who has proven through their voting record that they stand firmly on the side of reproductive freedom and opportunity for all. The only gubernatorial candidate with that track record is Mark.

Through our time in the Legislature, we’ve seen firsthand how diligently Mark fights for the rights of people in Washington. He understands that reproductive health is a foundational aspect of overall well-being, and he has consistently championed policies that ensure access to comprehensive reproductive care for women across our state.

Mark’s pro-choice record is not merely a collection of promises; it’s a testament to his integrity and effectiveness as a legislator. Over the last decade, Mark has voted for every bill in favor of reproductive rights. He understands that restrictions on reproductive rights disproportionately impact low-income women and communities of color, and that access to safe and legal abortion is not just a matter of personal choice but also an issue of justice and equity.

While many politicians may claim to support women’s rights during campaign seasons, Mark Mullet has consistently and reliably delivered results. Just this year, he worked with us to vote for: House Bill 1469 to legally protect those who pursue reproductive care in Washington; Senate Bill 5343, which ended cost-sharing for abortion services so patients aren’t stuck with a surprise bill; and a critical budget package that provides funds to both abortion providers and patients. This is only a snapshot of Mark’s exemplary record of protecting the right to choose in the state Senate.

We also know that Mark’s dedication to protecting women’s rights extends beyond policy-making. He engages with community organizations, advocacy groups and health care providers to understand the unique challenges women face and find innovative solutions to address them. His collaborative approach fosters partnerships that lead to practical and effective measures.

Mark recognizes that empowering women in the workplace is not only a matter of fairness but essential for fostering economic growth and prosperity. As a business owner himself, he understands the importance of fair wages, family-friendly policies and equal opportunities for all. Mark’s extensive experience in the private sector, combined with his legislative expertise, uniquely positions him to advocate for policies that support workplace well-being and professional advancement for all.

Electing a leader like Mark will ensure that Washington has the strongest reproductive rights protections in the nation. Mark has consistently stood up against attempts to roll back women’s health care access. We don’t just want someone with that proven commitment to protecting a woman’s right to choose as our next governor — we desperately need it.
