Letter: Pay back what you borrow

In 1969, I became the first person in my family to attend a four-year college. We never owned a home, so there was no second mortgage to tap into in order to send me to school. I had worked since I was 12 years old, and was good at saving. I secured national defense student loans, as well as qualifying for grants and scholarships from my school. I worked every summer vacation, and every semester break. I always had an on-campus job in addition to carrying a full load, and was able to finish in four years. I paid my loan back in 10 years, with no assistance, and no debt relief available, and no parents to assist me in any way. I borrowed what I needed, and paid back what I borrowed.
