Wednesday morning saw nothing but taillights for miles on Interstate 5 South through Vancouver. And as the sun rose traffic was stop and go on Interstate 205 South from Salmon Creek to the bridge.

A crash on the Interstate 5 Bridge about 6:40 a.m. backed up traffic on the freeway as far north as Minnehaha Street by 7 a.m. By 8 a.m., the backup had almost reached the I-5, I-205 split.

The left and center lanes of the bridge were blocked until about 7:30 a.m., according to the Washington State Department of Transportation, but by then the damage was done and commuters were stuck in slow traffic creeping south.

State Highway 500 west and Highway 14 west were also backed up approaching I-5. Highway 500 was also backed up approaching the I-205 onramp.

On I-205, there were no signs of crashes but traffic was stop and go for miles.

Traffic was largely cleared by 10 a.m. with some slow spots near downtown Vancouver.

No details about the initial crash or injuries were immediately available.
