Letter: Don’t take rights from others

In 1996 and 1997, I volunteered in support of the Oregon Death With Dignity Act. Many people were opposed to this for moral reasons. One key talking point was that you don’t have to participate or do it yourself unless you want to. But to support others with the right to participate if they choose, with medical supervision to end their life in dignity. This feels similar to the controversy over mifepristone/misoprostol or the abortion pill, gun rights, or marijuana use.

Really you don’t have to do any of these things unless you want to, but don’t take the right away from others please.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
