Letter: Honor Vietnam veterans

Wednesday, March 29, is National Vietnam Veterans Day. In further consideration, our state has designated a Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day on March 30 each year (2013 HB 1319). Vietnam and Vietnam-era veterans served in our armed forces, in any location, from Nov. 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975. We Americans witness the national and local efforts to acknowledge thousands of men and women who may have been denied a proper welcome upon returning home more than 50 years ago.

On Wednesday, several alliances are combining to sponsor the 50th Commemoration of the Vietnam War in honoring local veterans. This event is a fitting tribute to our brave men and women who served our country during a challenging time in history. We ask that all Vietnam War and Vietnam-era veterans attend this event and be recognized. This is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their service and dedication.

This event will be held at Clark College, Penguin Union Building 161, with a panel discussion at 11 a.m.; the Witness Tree Dedication and Commemoration Ceremony will occur at noon. Clark College is on spring break and will have available free parking. We should all take this opportunity to offer our veterans recognition, encouragement and appreciation.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
