Prep highlights: Union, Hockinson boys soccer punch tickets to state

The Union and Hockinson boys soccer teams both won on Thursday to clinch berths to their respective state tournaments.

Union defeated Olympia 1-0 at Spanaway in the 4A bi-district tournament. No other details were reported.

Hockinson survived a penalty-kick shootout with W.F. West, winning the PKs 4-2 after a 1-1 tie in the 2A district match that sent the winner to state and the loser home.

John Charles scored a first-half goal for Hockinson with an assist from Ryder Cole-Vogler. W.F. West also scored in the first half.

Columbia River sweeps 2A district tennis titles

Columbia River sophomore Emma Lungwitz won the 2A district singles title, defeating R.A. Long senior Emily Anderson 6-2, 6-1.

The Rapids tops doubles team of Lauren and Sydney Dreves only dropped two games on their way to the district title. They beat Jaisa Wilson and Hadley Jones of Washougal in the final, 6-0, 6-0.

The top five finishers in singles and doubles qualified for the bi-district tournament, which will be held Tuesday and Thursday at the Steamboat Tennis Club in Olympia.

Stars of the day

  • Kaliann Newberry, Heritage softball, was 2 for 3 with three RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base in the Timberwolves’ 13-1 win over Hudson’s Bay.
  • Kingsley Williams, Seton Catholic softball, went 3 for 3 with two doubles, three RBI, scored four runs and stole three bases as the Cougars won at Castle Rock 15-0.
  • Keegan Kirkwood, Camas softball, drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out double in the fourth inning as the Papermakers handed 1A Columbia of White Salmon its first loss of the season after 18 wins in a row.
  • Sydney Aman, Columbia-White Salmon softball, was 2 for 2 with a double and two RBI plus a run scored in the Bruins’ 5-4 non-league loss at Camas.
  • Ella Berfanger, Union softball, went 3 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored as the Titans beat Prairie 16-1 in a non-league game.
