Letter: Get rid of guns

I am a recent arrival in this country and come from a country where, apart from the police and the military, guns are almost unknown. I am dumbfounded by America’s apparent love affair with guns, and I have to ask why there is a need for guns in the first place.

When the Second Amendment was passed, it made sense to have a firearm. But does that apply today? Is the Second Amendment and “the right to bear arms” more important than the individual’s right to go to school or the bank or the shopping mall and expect to come home alive?

With the recent spate of mass shootings, one has to ask, “Why guns?” They are easy to use, they are unfortunately very effective, and, most important of all, they are available, though why military assault weapons are available to the public is something that has the rest of the world scratching their heads.

This has nothing to do with mental health issues. The rest of the world’s countries have mental health issues but are not experiencing the almost-daily carnage that happens in America. Wake up, America. Get with the 21st century, and get rid of those guns.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
