Letter: Stop slaughter of Americans

For America’s youth, guns are a major threat to life and for Americans under 50, illicit drugs (especially fentanyl) are the top killers. Guns and drugs kill and disable Americans as in a major war. For the past decade, hundreds of thousands of casualties show America is under siege.

Drug addictions are extremely hard to heal, but with a national will, guns can be tamed. Japan modeled highly effective gun management. For gun possession, an individual must 1) have a valid reason for a firearm; 2) be of sound mind and temperament; 3) undergo substantial training. Japan bars none who qualify and has almost no shooting deaths annually.

Our courts have repeatedly erred in interpreting our Second Amendment. The Second Amendment is one amendment (not two) and for original intent should be read as an integral statement under the Preamble to our Constitution. Requiring national standards for gun possession is consistent with our Constitution’s original intent. Courts must stop judicial gymnastics, step up and stop the slaughter of Americans. Common sense, morality and faith demand that patriots act now.
