As a storm centered over Clark County late Monday afternoon, lightning wreaked havoc on Clark Public Utilities equipment, interrupting power for thousands of residents.

Throughout Monday night and into the early hours of Tuesday morning, lightning struck transmission lines and damaged transformers, according to utility spokesman Dameon Pesanti. Transmission lines were struck twice around 6 p.m., causing blinks in power for about 12,500 customers the first time and about 27,000 customers the second time, he said.

From about 4 p.m. Monday to 3 a.m. Tuesday, Pesanti said lightning struck 18 transformers, which knocked out power for about 3,300 customers.

He said the volume of work meant it took crews an average of about three hours to repair each transformer.

Electricity for all customers was restored by about 5 a.m.
