Letter: Drawbridge should be rejected

And there it is again, the possibility of a lift bridge for taxpayers to spend billions on. Oh sure “it’s not a full-fledged alternative, but a design option” at this point. How long until it becomes a “full-fledged option” and then how long until it becomes reality and billions are spent on a bridge that will create the same traffic nightmares we have now?

Weren’t we promised a bridge with no lifts when all of the talks began about this project? Weren’t we promised smooth traffic flow in the area?

Isn’t time for the archaic laws of whatever bygone century they were enacted that give maritime vehicles precedence over land vehicle traffic to not be part of this river crossing? Isn’t it time to stop allowing one boat to create extra air pollution from idling vehicles because that boat is shutting down vehicle traffic across the Columbia? Isn’t it time for common sense to actually be enacted in the I-5 Bridge project?

The ball is in your court, Oregon and Washington politicians. Are you going to allow your constituents to be fleeced for billions of dollars and then have the project end up being the same thing we already have?
