Dylan Osborne, Max Fraser named MVPs of Clark County Senior All-Star baseball series

RIDGEFIELD — For four years of high school, Max Fraser and Dylan Osborne have been rivals — Fraser pitching for Camas High School and Osborne pitching for Union High School.

Next year, when the pair begin their college baseball careers, they will remain rivals — Fraser at Washington State and Osborne at the University of Washington.

They’ll even be on different West Coast League baseball teams this summer.

But for one night on Tuesday, Fraser and Osborne got to be on the same team.

“We compete against each other during the high school season, and obviously it’s really competitive,”  Fraser said. “But off the field, we’re really, really good friends. We’ve played with each other in the summer. But I think coming out to this All-Star game with all the guys from the Clark County area was a really cool way to cap off the high school career. It was fun, and our team won both games.”

With Osborne and Fraser pitching in the second game, the American League all-stars completed a sweep of the National League, winning 13-3 and 14-3, in the 46^th annual Clark County Senior Baseball All-Star series Tuesday at the Ridgefield Outdoor Recreation Center.

The series features the top high school senior baseball players in the county and serves as a feeder game for the Washington All-State series, which will be held June 23-25 in Yakima.

Osborne started for the American League team, pitched three innings, allowing one run and striking out eight. Fraser pitched the next three innings, also allowing one run and striking out seven.

For their efforts, Osborne and Fraser were named MVPs of the annual event.

“It’s always fun competing against Max and all the guys at Camas,” Osborne said. “It was fun today to compete with him. We’ve played with each other in the summer, but it had been a while since we played with each other. I had some close friends on the other team, close friends on this team. It was just fun, a good way to end the season.”

While the high school season ended for both players, the baseball season continues.

Fraser will play this summer with the Portland Pickles of the WCL, while Osborne will play for the Victoria HarbourCats.

How did Osborne end up going to Canada this summer?

“It was right after my official visit at UW,” he said. “I had just gotten home, and I was getting ready for school the next day. I look at my phone that morning, and I get a text from (Jason Kelly) my coach at UW. He goes ‘I got you down to go to Victoria this summer. Are you cool with that?’ And I’m like ‘Yeah.’

“You know, I’ve never been there. I’ve heard great things about Canada. I’ve heard the people are really nice and the scenery is great. So let’s go play baseball in Canada this summer.”

Fraser and Osborne both said one of the fun parts of Tuesday’s event was going getting to play alongside players from other schools and also having high school teammates on the opposite team.

Oddly enough, both runs allowed by Osborne and Fraser were driven in by the same player — Camas outfielder Zach Blair.

It was a long night of baseball that ended abruptly.

In previous years, the series was comprised of two eight-inning games. But because of a bevy of talented players in the area this spring, the coaches opted to expand the rosters and then extend each game to nine innings.

With the American League squad pounding out 27 runs, the second game – which normally ends by 8:30 or 9 p.m. – was still going on at 10 p.m., when the lights at the RORC are required to be turned off.

The lights went off before the bottom of the ninth could be played.
