Letter: Clarify meaning of ‘abortion’

By Dr. Allison Duncan, Vancouver
Published: December 7, 2024, 6:00am

Regarding Doug Glover’s letter (“Miscarriage, abortion are both tragic,” Our Readers’ Views, Nov. 30), I would like to clarify that the word miscarriage is the layperson term. The medical term is spontaneous abortion. The diagnosis codes we use for billing are in fact the exact same code for both.

Whether it is spontaneous or induced, they are both considered abortions. Given the stigma that has been placed on the word abortion, people avoid using the term. However, given the current climate it would be wise to increase education in this regard.

Sadly, many women with planned and desired pregnancies have now realized that unconscionable reproductive laws adversely affect them as well. Suggesting that “state governments should educate doctors when to do a D&C” is insulting. Governments trying to “educate” doctors have led to women dying in Texas and Georgia. Governments trying to “educate” doctors have led to obstetricians fleeing Idaho and Texas.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
