’Tis the season when twinkling lights illuminate our nights, making the darkness merry and bright. One light show is making a debut — Winter Gleam at Oaks Amusement Park in Portland — but several light shows have been going strong for decades, including the Christmas Ships Parade, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. Meanwhile, Portland’s Peacock Lane has been glowing every year for a century. Strolling through ZooLights or seeing the light display on Franklin Street in downtown Vancouver, it’s easy to capture the holiday spirit.
Until Dec. 22: The Port of Camas-Washougal has already hosted its annual Christmas Ships viewing party, but the Columbia and Willamette fleets will keep floating along through Dec. 22. The Columbia fleet will swing by the Grant Street Pier at 8:10 tonight, Friday and Dec. 17; Wintler Park shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday Dec. 20; the Interstate 205 Bridge and Steamboat Landing at 7 p.m. Dec. 18. See the complete schedule at christmasships.org.
Until Dec. 31: Peacock Lane in Portland’s Sunnyside neighborhood will be open for free viewing from 6-11 p.m. daily. Pedestrian-only nights are Dec. 15 and 16, when the street is blocked to vehicle traffic. Get complete details at peacocklane.org or check facebook.com/peacockln for updates.
Until Dec. 29: Oaks Amusement Park, 7805 S.E. Oaks Park Way, Portland, will host Winter Gleam from 5 to 10 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in December. See light displays, light tunnels and twinkling pathways. Enjoy games, seasonal food, local vendors with holiday gifts and photo opportunities with Santa Claus ($20). The park’s carousel, Oaks Park train and Yeti Mini Golf will also be open. Buy tickets ($18) at wintergleampdx.com.
