Officials on Tuesday identified a 45-year-old Vancouver man as the person fatally shot Dec. 4 by a Vancouver police officer outside of an east Vancouver Safeway.
Adam Grant Gunderson died from multiple gunshot wounds to the head, according to the Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Investigators also identified the officer who shot Gunderson as Kyle Beguelin Flores, 28. Beguelin Flores has worked for the Vancouver Police Department since May 2021. He’s assigned to east precinct patrol, according to the Office of Independent Investigations, which is investigating the shooting.
Vancouver police contacted Gunderson at 10:48 p.m. in the parking lot of Safeway, 13719 S.E. Mill Plain Blvd.
Gunderson and Beguelin Flores got into a physical fight, investigators say. During the fight, Gunderson pulled out a gun, according to Vancouver police.
Beguelin Flores shot Gunderson, who was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to investigators. The medical examiner’s office said Gunderson was near the grocery store’s loading dock when he was shot.
Beguelin Flores was injured in the fight and later treated, according to investigators.
Court records show Gunderson had a warrant for his arrest for a charge of attempting to elude a pursuing police officer in a 2023 Clark County Superior Court case. A Clark County sheriff’s deputy contacted Gunderson after reports he’d been digging through trash in an Orchards neighborhood. The deputy said Gunderson argued with him and then drove away. The deputy said he ended the pursuit after Gunderson ran red lights and weaved through traffic.
Investigators have not said if police had contacted Gunderson because of the warrant.
Three Vancouver officers — Beguelin Flores and two who witnessed the shooting — have been placed on critical incident leave, which is standard protocol.
The Office of Independent Investigations is seeking tips about the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call 564-250-5811.
