One shot away, again.
Vancouver golfer Alistair Docherty’s hopes of qualifying for the PGA Tour fell short on Sunday by one shot.
The 2012 Union High School graduate finished seventh in the PGA Tour Q-School Final Stage after shooting a 3-over-par 73 in Sunday’s final round at TPC Sawgrass at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
He shot a 3-under 277 for 72 holes. Three golfers tied for fourth at 276. The top five golfers, plus ties, earned their PGA Cards for the 2025 season.
Docherty entered the final round tied for first at 6-under for the tournament with Matthew Riedel.
But Sunday’s final round got off to a bad start as Docherty needed two shots to escape a greenside bunker, resulting in a double-bogey 7 on the first hole.
He had six pars and two bogeys on the front nine, leaving him 4-over for the round.
He ran off seven more pars on the back nine before notching his lone birdie of the day on No. 17 to keep his hopes alive.
Needing another birdie on No. 18, Docherty sent his approach shot over the green and he recorded another par, leaving him one shot from the tie for fourth place.
Alejandro Tosti and Will Chandler both shot 4-under 66s on Sunday to move ahead of Docherty.
Chandler had three pars and an eagle on No. 16 to get to 4-under for the tournament. Tosti was 4-under for the round on the front nine Sunday, then two bogeys and two birdies on the back nine held him there.
Riedel was 2-over on Sunday to also tie for fourth.
Lanto Griffin was 7-under on Sunday to finish with a 9-under 271 for the tournament. Hayden Buckley was second at 274 and Takuma Kanaya was third at 275.
Two months ago, at the season-ending Korn Ferry Tour Championship, Docherty fell one shot short of earning his PGA Tour card when he finished in a three-way tie for second place to finish 32nd in season points. The top 30 in Korn Ferry points earned PGA cards.
