Letter: Replace C-Tran with Uber?

By Philip Harder, Vancouver
Published: December 17, 2024, 6:00am

My wife and I live in east Vancouver and use Mill Plain between 117th Avenue and 164th Avenue. We travel the Mill Plain corridor about four to five times a week. We always comment on the amount of riders in the large buses that we see passing us.

The record in about 80 sightings is five passengers aboard with an average of two. That figure makes sense when you see that fares are only 4 percent of the revenue that C-Tran generates.

It would be interesting to see a breakdown of riders per bus on the two newer C-Tran routes on Mill Plain and Fourth Plain. Wouldn’t it save the citizens a lot of money if we paid Uber to transport all of those passengers? We would also not have to reduce the number of lanes of travel in those corridors for citizens who are paying to subsidize the transit system.
