‘The animals are the ones suffering’: Clark County Animal Control staffing levels haven’t changed in 25 years

Number of calls increases by 54 percent over last two years

Although they’re often viewed as such, Clark County Animal Control officers are no longer just dog catchers.

As Lead Officer Paul Batchelder drove around Vancouver on Tuesday in his animal control-branded truck, he reflected on the spectrum of calls the department’s five officers respond to on any given day. They cover most of the county’s more than 600 square miles, from the Vancouver waterfront to the town of Yacolt.
