Martinez: Holidays mean tournament time for basketball, wrestling

It may be the holiday break, but there is no rest for many high school basketball and wrestling teams this weekend.

The Pac Coast Wrestling Championships return to their traditional final weekend of the year when the event returns for a second year to the Clark County Events Center in Ridgefield on Friday and Saturday.

Wrestlers from 60 different high schools in Washington and Oregon will compete in the boys tournament, and another 44 schools will be represented in the girls tournament.

Doors open both Friday and Saturday at 8 a.m. with wrestling beginning at 9:30 a.m.

General admission for a two-day ticket is $30 for ages 14 and older and $25 for kids, seniors and military. A one-day ticket is $20 and $15. Children 6-and-under are free. Tickets are available online at paccoastwrestling.com.

Mountain View Invite

The Myron Lawrence Memorial basketball tournament at Fort Vancouver was a victim of budget cuts. But Mountain View boys coach JC Alexander took over the event and moved it to Mountain View.

The Mountain View Holiday Invitational will be an eight-team, three-day event held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Mountain View High School.

Local teams Columbia River, Evergreen, Union, Ridgefield and Mountain View will be joined by Snohomish, Shelton, Benson of Portland.

The event tips off Thursday with Columbia River vs. Evergreen at 2 p.m., Benson vs. Union at 4 p.m., Ridgefield vs Shelton at 6 p.m. and Snohomish vs. host Mountain View at 8 p.m.

The championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday.

Camas at Les Schwab

The Camas boys basketball team was invited to participate in the Les Schwab Invitational, a prestigious event that draw teams from around the West Coast.

The tournament will be played Thursday through Monday at Portland State’s Stott Center.

Camas will open the tournament against Westview (Ore.) at 3 p.m. Thursday. After a day off Friday, the Papermakers return to the court on Saturday.

Five in Portland

Five Clark County girls basketball teams will be participating in four different brackets of the PCA Holiday Classic.

All games are slated for Friday, Saturday and Monday at high schools around Portland.

Mountain View will play in the Sapphire Bracket at Grant High School. The Thunder open against Liberty of Hillsboro, Ore., at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Union and Evergreen play in the Pearl Bracket at Grant and Lincoln high schools. Union opens against St. Mary’s of Stockton, Calif., at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Grant. Evergreen opens against Sunset of Beaverton, Ore., at noon Friday at Lincoln.

Skyview plays in the Jade Bracket at McDaniel High School. The Storm open against McNary of Keizer, Ore., at 3 p.m. Friday.

Battle Ground plays in the Ruby Bracket at Lincoln and McDaniel. The Tigers face McDaniel at 1:30 p.m. Friday at McDaniel.

Other teams

Camas girls: The Papermakers are in the Surf ‘N Slam Tournament Surf Division in San Diego on Friday, Saturday and Monday.

Mark Morris girls: The Monarchs will play in the T-Town Throwdown Thursday through Saturday at Silas High School in Tacoma.

Kelso boys: The Hilanders will play in the T-Town Throwdown Thursday through Saturday at Silas High School in Tacoma.

Prairie boys: The Falcons will play Friday and Saturday at the Mountlake Terrace Tournament.

Heritage girls: The Timberwolves will play in the SCTC Holiday Classic in Stayton, Ore., on Thursday through Saturday.
