Precisely when many families were opening presents and celebrating Christmas, a car thief stole a vehicle in a Camas neighborhood, then used that car to drive around and prowl other vehicles, according to Camas police. Police are seeking the public’s help to catch the thief, who was caught on surveillance video, and recover the stolen car.

The thief was wearing a dark beanie, black hooded sweatshirt with white stripes on the shoulder and arms, light gray pants, and bright orange or red shoes with black laces.

The stolen car is a dark gray Mazda CX3, Washington license plate BSD5166. It was stolen from the Woodburn neighborhood. The thief then drove around the neighborhood and broke into other vehicles, stealing a variety of items including garage door openers, a gift card, cash and a cellphone. These crimes all occurred between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

In a Thursday afternoon update, the police department said it is investigating additional vehicle prowls, in which items were stolen, in the same area. Investigators are looking into whether they’re connected to the Wednesday crime spree.

If you see this stolen vehicle and it is occupied, call 911. If it’s not occupied, call the nonemergency dispatch number 311. If you have a tip or other information about the thief, email Camas police Officer Tim Fellows at tfellows@cityofcamas.us.

Camas police remind everyone to remove valuables and keys from vehicles, lock car doors and report suspicious activity around vehicles to police.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect the correct license plate number of the stolen vehicle. It also includes updated information provided by Camas police about additional vehicle prowls and a person of interest in the case.
