Girls basketball roundup (Dec. 28): Brooklynn Haywood’s 46 points leads Union past South Salem

Brooklynn Haywood scored 46 points and was 15 for 15 from the free-throw line as the Union Titans girls basketball team beat South Salem 77-53 on Saturday in the semifinals of the Pearl Bracket at the Pacific Office Automation Holiday Classic at Lincoln High School in Portland.

Union (8-1) led by five points after the first quarter and then outscored the Saxons 24-3 in the second quarter to put the game out of reach.

The Titans outrebounded the Saxons 40-25 and forced 14 turnovers.

Jalise Chatman added 13 points and Myla Larry had a game-high 10 rebounds to go with her seven points for Union, which will play Ida B. Wells for the bracket title on Monday at Lincoln High School.

MOUNTAIN VIEW 59, BEAVERTON 56 (OT) — The Thunder overcame a slow start and then held off Beaverton in overtime in the semifinal game of the Sapphire Bracket at the POA Holiday Classic at Grant High School.

Jadlyn Senderson made six 3-pointers in scoring her game-high 21 points for Mountain View. Sveva Bernasconi added 13 points and Layla Senderson scored six of her 11 points in overtime.

Mountain View plays in the bracket championship game on Monday against either Crater or St. Joseph’s.

IDA B. WELLS 56, EVERGREEN 50 — The Plainsmen came up short in the Pearl Bracket semifinal of the POA Holiday Classic at Lincoln High. Evergreen will face South Salem for third place on Monday.

TIGARD 61, BATTLE GROUND 34 — Ella Horst had 12 points and five rebounds for Battle Ground in the Ruby Bracket consolation game of the POA Holiday Classic.

After a 13-13 first quarter, Tigard went on an 18-1 run in the second quarter to pull away.

Battle Ground finishes the tournament at 10:30 a.m. Monday against St. Mary’s of Portland at Lincoln High School.

CAMAS 61, ST. IGNATIUS (Calif.) 44 — Keirra Thompson scored a game-high 28 points on 10 of 14 shooting and five 3-pointers as the Papermakers won their Surf Bracket game at the Surf ‘N Slam Tournament in San Diego.

Camas’ Sophie Buzzard had 17 points, and Lauren Hood had a team-high eight rebounds to go with four points, four assists and a blocked shot.

Next for Camas is a game against Xaverian of Brooklyn, N.Y., at noon Monday.

WATERVILLE-MANSFIELD 65, LA CENTER 41 — Riley Schultz scored 20 points and Paige Sherry had 12, but the Wildcats could not keep up with their opponent from the Central B League in the game played at Chelan High School.

Waterville-Mansfield outscored La Center 28-8 in the second quarter to pull away. Delaney Nelson led all scorers with 33 points for the Shockers.

MARK MORRIS 36, SILAS 23 — The Monarchs finished play at the T-Town Throwdown with a victory after losing their first two. Kea Makaiwi had a solid all-around game for Mark Morris with eight points, seven rebounds and three assists.
