BRUSH PRAIRIE — More than 100 people attended Silver Buckles Youth Equestrian Center’s annual Peppermints & Ponies event Dec. 16 at Silver Buckle Ranch. The public got to meet the horses and goats and take pictures with Santa.

Each horse had a story of their own: there’s Charlie, the Appaloosa who used to pony young race horses at the track; Olive, the mustang who lived in the wild for the first 10 years of her life; Shanti, the Fell Pon (the breed the Queen of England used to ride) and many others.

Along with other volunteers, the Rein & Shine 4-H Club sponsored by the equestrian center shared knowledge of the horses and showed people around the facility. One member even played Christmas songs on her flute.

This year, the equestrian center was able to glam things up a bit thanks to donations from Burgerville and Waste Connections.

Board member and Treasurer Debra Hentz said that this particular event is special to her because it’s accessible to families of all income levels.

“It’s also an opportunity for kids to meet and pet horses and other animals, especially those kids who don’t have that opportunity in their daily lives,” she said. “I enjoy watching our staff, board members and volunteers come together and work on a team-focused event, and then prepare and showcase our special place to community visitors.”

Board President Stephanie Macomber added: “Peppermints & Ponies gives a unique experience to the young ones and adults alike … Attendees also leave with a gift they made to remember this special day.”
